Spending a little extra time in the mornings and nights can make all the difference in the appearance and overall health of your skin. Our skin is the largest organ in our body and it is what protects our vital inner organs from bacteria, pollutants and other harmful substances around us. The key to radiant, youthful and healthy skin is using the correct products and creating a morning and nighttime routine that caters to your skin type and its specific needs.
Creating Your Skin Care Routine
Once you have determined your skin type and what products it needs to flourish, you can then create your personalized skincare routine. Remember that your skin is always changing and that means your routine should be changing with it especially if you live in an area that has distinct weather conditions each season. Warmer climates call for lightweight non-clogging products with extra protection from the sun while colder climates require heavier more moisturizing products to combat the dry air.
Cleanse
The most essential step to any skincare routine is to cleanse your skin, whether it's your face or body. Cleansing removes all the dirt, oils and any other environmental pollutants that found their way into your pores throughout the day. Cleansing your face and body with your hands and a washcloth works, however, for a deeper more effective cleanse we recommend our Electric Facial Cleansing Brush for your face and our Rechargeable Exfoliating and Cleansing Shower Brush for your body. Both products are pictured above.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating is the process of using a scrub or coarser brush to remove the layer of dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of scars or hyperpigmentation. Even though it is important to exfoliate, this should only be done once or twice a week as over-exfoliation or aggressive exfoliation can actually break the top layer of your skin creating an opening for dirt and bacteria and eventually leaves a scar behind.
Tone
The first product that should touch your skin after cleansing and exfoliating is a toner. Toners are thin liquid products that remove any leftover dirt, provides your skin with an extra boost of vitamins and nutrients and helps other products to be absorbed more efficiently in the skin.
Treat
This step of your routine is meant to correct any issues or concerns you have with your skin whether its acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, or sun damage. Treatments are generally concentrated doses of active ingredients that work overtime to correct skin issues. Multiple treatments can be used at a time just do thorough research or consult a dermatologist to ensure there will be no negative reactions between the different treatments. Also never combine your treatments with your moisturizer. To reap all the benefits each product must be applied one by one, layer by layer.
Moisturize
Moisturizers have a simple but crucial function in your skincare routine. It seals all the products into your skin and retains moisture throughout the day and night. Next to cleansing, moisturizing is a step in your routine that should no be neglected. As we age, our skin loses its ability to retain moisture on its own and daily activities strip away our natural oils. Moisturizers should be used all year round.
Protect
The simplest step of your routine but probably the most crucial; protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. Regardless of your location, season or weather conditions, UV rays are always present. Make it a priority to apply some sort of SPF product to your face and body to protect your skin. Many products are made with SPF but adding a little extra won't do you any harm. It is easier to prevent sun damage than trying to fix it.
